The Mayor of Casterbridge is a novel by Thomas Hardy that was first published in 1886. ![]() The novel deals with the struggles between individual will, the hold of the past, and the relentless control of circumstances in a changing society. major conflict Wracked with guilt over selling his wife and child, Henchard tries to escape from the shadow of his past and his overwhelming need to punish himself for it. Henchard is deeply developed as a realistic character, but also larger-than-life in the manner of a Greek or Shakespearean tragic hero - huge in his determination and huge in his failings. setting (place) Casterbridge, England (a fictional town based on the city of Dorchester) protagonist Michael Henchard. His novel The Woodlanders, for instance, tackled the unfairness of divorce law at the time.
